My father was a professional photographer and film developer. Childhood memories include freezer-stocks of film, darkrooms thick with acrid chemicals and endlessly being the subject of photographs. And yet, my own pursuits in photography began only recently.
One day in 2006 while playing with
a macro lens, I unexpectedly discovered a garden in a new way. Beautiful
things have always attracted me but through the camera lens, I could engage with
them so much more intimately. Moving from flower to flower experimenting
with focus and depth of field, my awareness was flooded with color and form.
Ideas of time and space became irrelevant...a sense of focused calm swept over
me. I realized
this was it: My practice in the present! I'd discovered
that pursuit in each of us that just feels good and is effortless. The symbol for "Maki" means Truth. For all that I do, seeking to express what is true for me is an ever-present guiding principle. I also naturally see the beauty in the ordinary. Put together, these qualities make art through photography an instinctual mode of self-expression. Beyond the personal however, my work aims to extend a practical philosophy to all people: Specifically, the philosophy that Truth and Beauty are One. Philosophy: Truth And Beauty Are One Beauty is a powerful unifying principle. No person shuns a beautiful thing and by this virtue, all people have the potential to bond on this awareness. We are in a time where there is a desire for peace, en masse. It is my hope that my artwork will reconnect people with one another through a shared appreciation for simple beauty. My images are of things in everyday life as they naturally are, practically showing us that the potential for peace is all around because the ability to perceive it is within each and every one of us. |
